Abstract

Sports injuries are a major concern among college athletes as they can adversely affect athletic
performance, academic participation, and overall health. The present study aimed to investigate
the prevalence of sports injuries, identify their major causes and risk factors, assess athletes'
awareness regarding injury prevention, and evaluate the effectiveness of preventive practices
among college athletes. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The
sample consisted of 100 college athletes (50 male and 50 female), aged 18–25 years, selected
from government and private colleges in Bathinda District, Punjab. Data were collected using a
structured questionnaire, injury assessment form, interviews, and relevant sports records. The
collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and
standard deviation) and inferential statistics (independent sample t-test, Chi-square test, and
Pearson's correlation coefficient). The findings revealed that ankle sprains (32%) were the most
common sports injuries, followed by knee injuries (24%) and muscle strains (18%). Female
athletes showed slightly higher injury scores than male athletes, although the difference was not
statistically significant (p > 0.05). A significant association was found between training intensity
and injury occurrence, while greater awareness of injury prevention was associated with fewer
injuries. Regular warm-up exercises and the use of protective equipment significantly reduced
injury risk. The study concludes that scientifically planned training, injury prevention education,
proper conditioning, and the consistent use of protective equipment are essential for minimizing
sports injuries and promoting safe sports participation among college athletes.
